June 28, 2007 on 2:29 pm | In Animation, Announcement, Example, stop-motion | No CommentsThink what you will of the Numa phenomenon on YouTube, you have to hand it to Keith Eddy of Russellville for putting in the time to win the $25,000 Numa contest. It includes stop-motion and regular DV footage edited in Adobe Premier. Hopefully Keith will come over and take some of the animation classes and tell us about his process.

Digital Storytelling Makeshop
June 19, 2007 on 5:54 pm | In Announcement, Event, Storytelling | No Comments]] Aargh – we’ve postponed the makeshop until later in the fall. Stay tuned! (7/20/07) [[
I’ll be conducting a Makeshop (hands-on workshop) at the New Design School in Fayetteville July 24-25-26.
Create a digital, personal narrative that can be shown on DVD or posted to the Web.
The makeshop attendees will utilize modern, easy-to-use software in constructing their digital stories, including scanning of photos and documents, digitizing videos, writing and recording a voiceover script, using music and editing it all together.
The makeshop attendees are asked to bring the artifacts that will be incorporated into their story, including photos, videos (VHS, mini-DV only) and documents to the first session. Attendees are also welcome (encouraged!) to E-mail Tom with any questions before the makeshop.
A visit with designer Bruce Licher
June 19, 2007 on 4:45 pm | In Tools, Typography | No Comments![]()
Had a great visit today with designer Bruce Licher, who is a letterpress expert and great designer, not to mention extremely accomplished musician. He has a great little studio space here in Sedona, AZ. My Typography class will be able to see the cool samples he gave me of his work, including his 4″ x 6″ letterpress-ed business card.
Coolness Discussed at NMC
June 7, 2007 on 3:07 pm | In Announcement, NMC, Product Review, Tools | No CommentsAlways a lot of discussion of new tools and techniques at the New Media Consortium Summer Conference, and here are a few.
- Scott Pagano’s reel is sick and his presentation was fascinating.
- Soundslides is an awesome little tool for making simple web-based slideshows with audio.
- Universal Everything
- W+K Tokyo Lab Studio new music label concept
- Reline 2 DVD collection of 18 progressive audiovisual works by international artists
- The “Design Remixed” hands-on tutorial by Apple staff was great and renewed my interest in Motion.
- The Nancybelle Project, Kim Pearson’s research project in multi-threaded storytelling for journalism dealing with Nancybelle Valentine.
Indianapolis
June 6, 2007 on 7:05 pm | In Announcement, Event, NMC, Tools | No CommentsJosh is about the only one who looks good in this photo at the New Media Consortium Summer Conference 2007 opening reception in Indianapolis, sponsored by Apple and Washington University. I’ll blame the motion and the eyes closed of Jared and I on the camera phone.
Tomorrow a hands-on demo of Apple’s “Color” application and an Apple workshop entitled “Design Remixed,” as well as my presentation at 10:15. Looking forward also to Scott Pagano’s (Motion Designer and VJ) keynote presentation on “Motion Design and Process.” Oh, and Apple announced a free copy of Aperture for *everyone* at the conference…
