Thirty-six black and white silver gelatin prints by Texas-based photographer Keith Carter are currently on exhibit in the Fine Arts Center Gallery. The exhibition, titled “A Certain Alchemy,” is on loan from the Wittliff Gallery of Southwestern & Mexican Photography at Texas State University- San Marcos. The exhibition will run through March 3. Gallery hours are 9 am – 5:30 pm, Monday – Friday.

Keith Carter was born in Madison, Wisconsin in 1948, but moved to Beaumont, Texas when he was about 5 years old and has lived there ever since. He teaches at Lamar University in Beaumont, where he holds the endowed Walles Chair of Art. His work is internationally recognized and acclaimed and may be found in numerous collections, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Art Institute of Chicago; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and the George Eastman House. He is the recipient of two National Endowment for the Arts Regional Survey Grants and the Lange-Taylor Prize from the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University.

Keith Carter will visit the University of Arkansas campus later this month to present a workshop for students and a public lecture to be held on Thursday, February 23 at 7:30 pm in Room 213 of the Fine Arts Center. A reception for the artist will follow in the gallery that evening.

Artwork by University of Arkansas studio faculty members, as well as two emeriti faculty, is featured in the Fine Arts Center Gallery from January 9 – February 3, 2006. This exhibition opens the spring semester and provides students and other visitors with an opportunity to appreciate the creativity of the teaching faculty.

Participating artists include Neppie Conner, Ryan Deemer, Jacqueline Golden, Tom Hapgood, Jeannie Hulen, Joanne Jones, Hank Kaminsky, Angela La Porte, Kristin Musgnug, Marilyn Nelson, John Newman, Mike Peven, Robert Ross, and Larry Swartwood. Their work covers a gamut of media, including drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture and computer-generated art.

A reception will be held on Thursday, January 19 from 5 – 7 pm in the gallery.
