April 2006

The annual showcase exhibition of artwork by graduating seniors in the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) program opens on Monday, May 1 in the Fine Arts Center Gallery. A companion exhibition, featuring the work of seniors completing the Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree, will be presented in the Anne Kittrell Gallery in the Arkansas Union. A reception for all 41 participating artists will be held on Friday, May 12 at 5:00 pm at both venues.

The BFA and BA Senior Shows include works in a variety of media, including photography, painting, graphic design, ceramics, sculpture and digital media. The BFA and BA students are organized into teams and have taken on the responsibility of designing and printing posters, announcements, and other publicity materials; coordinating the related mailing, press and public relations duties; and installing the art exhibitions in the two galleries.

The BFA Senior Show will be the final exhibition of the 2005-06 season in the Fine Arts Center Gallery, which will be closed for renovations May 15 – June 30.

Master of Fine Arts candidate Sean Fitzgibbon’s recent work was featured in the Fine Arts Center Gallery April 12 – 26, 2006. The title of the show, Divine Messengers, derived from the depiction of angels (from the Greek work ‘angelos’ which translates as ‘messenger’) throughout this body of work.

Fitzgibbon traveled to Italy last summer with the University of Arkansas’ Art in Rome program, which inspired a series of collages based on his sketchbook drawings of classical sculpture. His focus on images of angels found throughout cemeteries, cathedrals and city streets continued with a group of larger, mixed media works that utilize photography, prismacolor, charcoal, ink, found papers and transfer techniques. The resulting ‘layering’ of media reflects the layering of various periods of art, architecture and religion Fitzgibbon discovered throughout modern Europe.
